It fixes some bugs (one potential crash bug in the VNC client), but mainly, it adds 8-bit color support (ugly) and Zlib support (useful) to the VNC server.
With Zlib support, the VNC server is actually practical to use over the Internet. It uses about 10X less bandwidth, at least when using normal desktop applications. CPU usage is a bit higher when using Zlib, but you can always turn off compression in the VNC client if this is a problem.
